Meet Artisan Market Artists Nolan & Blake Peterson!

Blake and Nolan Peterson are woodworkers from Viroqua, WI specializing in making cutting boards from reclaimed hardwoods.

Nolan and Blake have always enjoyed hands-on projects and building. Their natural affinity was nurtured by educational choices that allowed them to follow their passions, which now include woodworking and entrepreneurship. Bolan Woods evolved out of their concern for our planet and its people. They strive to not just make great products, but to inspire people to chase their dreams and do what they love.

Nolan and Blake describe their work and process:

We start every cutting board by milling down reclaimed rough sawn hardwoods to the dimensions that we need. Once all of the pieces of wood are laid out in a pattern that we desire, then it is time to glue them up. Using Titebond III wood glue we apply a liberal amount of glue to every seem and then clamp all the pieces of wood together, making sure to keep the cutting board flat. After letting the glue dry for 24 hours we take the cutting board out of clamps and plane the excess glue off. Then we sand the cutting board down to 220 grit sandpaper. We raise the grain of the cutting board three times by spraying a light coat of water onto the board and then sand the cutting board again using 220 grit sandpaper. After the cutting board is sanded smooth we add walnut oil until the wood doesn't want to soak up any more.
