Meet October’s Emerging Artist Hannah Hamilton
What is influencing your work at the moment?
I'm focusing on grounding myself, whether in my Korean ancestry, using painting as an emotional outlet, or by capturing what's directly around me.
How did you come to focus on your current subject?
I've moved around the country in the last few years while also trying to build my own identity. While good, this can feel a bit transient, so I try to find ways to ground myself in my roots and surroundings.
Can you articulate what draws you to a particular composition?
I don't always apply this to my art, but generally I like intimate compositions that focus on lesser noticed things. I like focusing on details that tell a story, but aren't always consciously noticed.
Why did you decide to work in your chosen medium?
I've done a lot of sketching with pencil and graphite, but really craved color and texture. Paint fell naturally from that.
What does your studio look like?
Utter chaos. It's a small, uncontained space that somehow feels more inspiring to me when it's cluttered with the remnants of attempted art.
